Invites Public Comment on the
Federal Facility Agreement for
Fort Detrick Area B, Frederick, Maryland
The public comment period will last 45 days from the date of publication
of this notice (Dec. 17th).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region III, along with the
U.S. Army, have signed a Federal Facility Agreement (FFA) to continue the
environmental cleanup at Fort Detrick Area B.
The agreement outlines the two federal agencies’ roles in the investigation
and cleanup of areas where contamination may exist at Area B. The Army, as
the lead agency, is responsible for conducting and paying for the
investigation and, if needed, cleanup of Area B. EPA, along with the Maryland
Department of Environment (MDE), will oversee the process to make certain
that a thorough investigation and cleanup is conducted, thus ensuring the
protection of public health and the environment. The agreement also
provides the framework under which all activities will be performed, along
with a requirement for the development and updating of a Site Management
Plan which outlines the schedule for all work required at Area B.
